The Burney Regional Community Fund was established to address the needs within the communities of the Greater Burney Region, and to build a community of philanthropists in the region now and forever. Candi Keller Endowment for Catholic Education

Candice Marie (Sobieralski) Keller was born in Tucson Arizona on January 20, 1961, one of four daughters born to Dan and Josie Sobieralski. The family moved from Tucson to Woodland Hills in Southern California, eventually settling in Redding in 1971. She attended St Joseph School graduating in 1975, Shasta High School graduating in 1979 and CSU Chico graduating in 1983. This very small town on the California Oregon border proudly flys a 30’x60′ flag 200 feet above the city. It is the tallest flag pole in the west. Our flag is our way of showing how proud we are of America, and of our men and women who serve in our Military. It is a memorial to those who served and gave the utmost. Elmer H. Schmidt Christian Broadcasting Fund

Elmer was born March 31, 1916. He lived in Adin, CA for 72 years and owned and worked a ranch with his brother. Neither of them ever married or had children. They were very frugal and Elmer had many stories of how they built and repaired farm equipment from parts of other old equipment. They saved everything because you never knew what might come in handy down the road. They did not believe in borrowing money so they paid cash for everything they needed or they did without. They did not have a telephone on the ranch and the post office was 4.5 miles away so communication was difficult with the rest of the world. He really enjoyed Christian radio and he wanted to help stations continue their programming. He loved all kinds of music and had kept several old instruments collected by his family including a huge old pipe organ. Elmer passed away on June 25, 2012. […]

Jim and Dolores Cusick Memorial Scholarship

Jim Cusick, born and raised in Weed, CA spent most of his life in the Weed/Mt. Shasta area. While attending Weed High School (class of ’45) he lettered in four sports. After serving in the Army, he played football for the only undefeated team in Santa Rosa Junior College history (1949-50).

He remained a sportsman throughout his life valuing family, friends and small town life. On June 30, 1979 he married the love of his life, Dolores Irene Smith Balcom. Affectionately known as “Dode”, she was born in 1931 and raised in Klamath Falls and Grants Pass Oregon.

She grew up riding horses and enjoyed playing the clarinet in her school band. She and Jim had both raised their families when they met and fell in love, and decided to build the rest of their lives together, including melding both of their families into one. […]

Madrone Hospice House Endowment

In 1999, Madrone Hospice built the Hospice House as an option for hospice patients who are unable to remain in their homes. The Madrone House was the first house in California to be designed specifically for hospice patients. It was also the first Hospice House built in a rural community in California, and has been used as a model for rural communities nationwide. This scholarship was established in memory of Matt Solus, the son of Fred & Elouise Solus of Yreka. Matt was a victim of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Although Matt was on a heart transplant list, he succumbed to the disease at the age of 22. Matt was a 1997 graduate of Yreka High School. The Solus Family were pioneers in Siskiyou County, having first moved there in 1850. Matt was a member of the Explorer Program with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department and had a strong interest in law enforcement and fire science. This fund supports the ongoing mission of Shasta Community Health Center (SCHC). The mission of SCHC is to ensure access to high quality primary and preventive medical, dental, mental and general health care services to those who have great difficulty accessing care in our community. Typically these are uninsured and underinsured, including women, infants, children and families. Many of these patients are from low-income working poor and/or those with special needs. About 50% of those served by SCHC are infants and children. SCHC cares for 25% of Shasta County’s population, with over 90% of those served falling below federal poverty.
