Mossbrae Falls Trail Fund

Mossbrae Falls is a 175-foot wide and 52-foot high natural spring-fed waterfall that courses down the side of a moss-covered rockface into the Sacramento River. Mossbrae Falls is arguably the most famous and beautiful waterfall in California that you will never see. That’s because there is currently no legal access to the falls. Mossbrae Falls is surrounded by private land and steep terrain. A 1.2-mile hike along Union Pacific Train tracks currently is the only way to see the Falls, but walking along the tracks is illegal and especially dangerous due to the narrow canyon walls. People have been hit by a train in 2011 and 2019 while trying to access the Falls.

The City of Dunsmuir is raising money to create a public trail connecting the Hedge Creek Falls Trail to Mossbrae Falls. When completed, the Hedge Creek Falls trail will be extended another 0.6 miles, becoming one mile long, providing access to two of the most beautiful waterfalls in the North State.

The new trail will feature a pedestrian bridge over the Sacramento River and a raised trail along the Sacramento. Union Pacific has agreed to grant the right of way to build the trail; the only thing that is missing is the $3 Million in funding needed to make this trail project a reality.
