Jim and Dolores Cusick Memorial Scholarship

An opportunity for graduates of Weed High School in Weed, CA. who participated in sports.

Jim Cusick, born and raised in Weed, CA spent most of his life in the Weed/Mt. Shasta area. While attending Weed High School (class of ’45) he lettered in four sports. After serving in the Army, he played football for the only undefeated team in Santa Rosa Junior College history (1949-50).

He remained a sportsman throughout his life valuing family, friends and small town life. On June 30, 1979 he married the love of his life, Dolores Irene Smith Balcom. Affectionately known as “Dode”, she was born in 1931 and raised in Klamath Falls and Grants Pass Oregon.

She grew up riding horses and enjoyed playing the clarinet in her school band. She and Jim had both raised their families when they met and fell in love and decided to build the rest of their lives together, including melding both of their families into one.

They accomplished this by introducing traditions and creating a haven of peace and acceptance for every member of the family. They built their beautiful home in the woods, a retreat for all to visit, and with their strong love and core small town values embraced their friends and family with acceptance and love. Jim passed in 1997 and Dode joined him in 2017. Since 1998, the Jim and Dolores Cusick Memorial Scholarship, now dedicated to both their memories, has helped local high school athletes attain their college dreams.
